We United the Hearts of Turkish and Japanese Children with “Bridge of Love”.

On March 11, 2001, children of Japan did not only lose their homes and loved ones during the tsunami disaster; but also their letters, photos, toys, and happy memories they had.

While seeking ways in great sorrow to be of any help to them as GEA SAR Team, we initiated the “BRIDGE of LOVE” project with Turkish Prime Ministry, Department of Disaster and Emergency Management.
In the cities of Istanbul,Ankara,Bursa, Kocaeli, Yalova, Sakarya and Düzce , 21,500 Turkish children wrote their Messages of Love and Friendship on 21,500 postcards.

These 21,500 postcards were written one by one, and with great care, by Turkish Children;

… and they were translated into Japanese one by one, and with great care, by volunteering translators.
2,300 paintings, created for children affected from the tsunami, were collected from primary and secondary schools.

2,500 small handmade toys, prepared by GEA volunteers over the course of 3 months were packaged to be shipped to Japan.

21,500 Postcards,
2,300 Paintings,
2,500 Handmade Toys,
1,000 Bridge of Love T-shirts were prepared, packed and sent to Japan.

Our Team had meetings with Mr. Hisashi TOKUNAGA, Japanese Asst.Minister of Foreign Affairs, and with Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Bridge of Love exhibition met with the Japanese public at the exhibition center of Tokyo’s Shibuya Municipality.

The opening ceremony was conducted by the Mayor of Shibuya.  Tokyo Ambassador of Turkey was also present at the opening ceremony, and we were honored to have the former Japanese Minister of Education as well, who was also the former Japanese Ambassador inTurkeyat the time of Marmara Earthquake.

After exhibition opening, our team of 19 traveled to Iwate and Miyagi regions to meet with the children in the disaster zone.  We brought the love and support of Turkish people to the Tsunami-affected children.

We sang Turkish and Japanese songs for them.
We prepared magician tricks for them.
We shared the paintings, postcards, toys full of love messages, and t-shirts on which the paintings were printed, with Japanese children.
We visited the schools in the disaster zone and delivered the Postcards and Paintings.
We gave our extra sets of painting and postcards to mayors and the leaders of local NGOs in the disaster area, to subsequently be exhibited in the schools.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all Turkish Children, who sent paintings and postcards to the project; and to all volunteer translators;

(Ankara University, department of Japanese Literature; Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Department of Japanese language; Erciyes University, Department of Japanese Language & Literature;  Turkish Japanese Cultural and Information Center)
