  Preparedness & Protection against Earthquakes

  A. WHAT TO DO BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE?

• You wonn't have time to think! Develop Correct Reflexive reactions!
• To change your mind, give up to think: “It won't happen to me”.
• Do not postpone the preparations.
• Step by step go over all of the furniture. Designate possible furniture that may fall and cause injuries and fix or change their location. Prepare a list with your family members by going over the rooms one by one.
• Prepare a torch, a pair of shoes and drink water and keep them ready at your bedside
• Everyone shall have his/her own earthquake preparation bag, that is previously prepared, and take it with himself while leaving the building after an earthquake
• You may use your relatives living in other cities as a “communication station” in order to communicate with your family members.
• Keep a torch, fire extinguisher and first aid kit at home and at your Office.

  B. WHAT TO DO DURING AN EARTHQUAKE?

TO DO

•  Stay calm
• Be calm and invite other people to calm down.
• Do not change your place until the quake has stopped or it became safe to move.
•  Take the fetus(baby) position nearest place.

(FETUS POSITION: The most protective position, for head, neck and internal organs. The minimum space on the ground by pulling your knees.)

NOT TO DO

• Do not panic.
• Do not try to jump from the windows!!!
• Never try to run outside the building
• Never run to the stairs, and do not use elevators.
• Do not use electricity buttons, lighters, candles and matches during the quake
• Keep away from the balconies

In crowded places it is not possible that many people, who are in panic and in hurry, safely leave the building at the same time. Do not run to the exits. Wait until the quake has stopped. Protect yourself with furniture like desks and armchairs. Be calm and invite other people to calm down.

  C. WHAT TO DO AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE ?

• Be calm - Do not panic.
• Control your own situation. Try to understand whether you are injured or not.
• Put on your shoes.
• Control the possible injuries of your family and people around you. Do not move the heavily injured casualties, unless there is no immediate risk for further injuries.
• Be ready and get prepared for aftershocks. Leave the building quickly and carefully

  D. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE UNDER DEBRIS?

• Do not scream or yell randomly.
• Try to get out, only if you see a certain exit way and if you are sure that your health conditions allows you to move.
• If you do not feel ready, stay where you are, stay safe, be calm and patient. Do not panic.
• Try to response and inform about your situation if you hear a sound from outside.
• Try to catch a rhythm while you are breathing.
• Repeat yourself “I won't panic, I won't panic”. Think positive: “i will survive !” Do not create bad imaginations in your mind.
• If there are other people under the debris, try to calm them down.
• Try to find a tool that would help you to make noise for outsiders to notice you in following hours (e.g. a piece of metal or rock)
